Inspired by the setting of the 6th C. monastic settlement of Killoluaig nearby, we will make insular bronze handbells in an authentic medieval metalwork setting on Culture Night 2026. During the demonstration we will use a charcoal-fired pit furnace, hand bellows and clay moulds to cast a series of reproduction and sculptural bells in response to the rich medieval archaeology of Uíbh Ráthach. The event follows on from two recent Heritage Week events in Lusk and Tralee.
The event takes place Friday, 18th September from 5pm till 7.30pm here at Killoluaig (off the Cahersiveen - Portmagee Road, V23 H337). Please dress according to the weather as this is an outdoor event. In the event of extreme weather we will have an indoor iron bell making demonstration and a talk about the bells. The drop-in event is free and no booking is required thanks to Culture Night funding from Kerry County Council.
